Infidelity is a very touchy topic. Nobody likes even think about it, much less talk about it or confess to it. Trying to get statistics on how many married couples cheat on each other is certainly not easy. How many people will readily admit that they have extra marital affairs, even if it is just to a stranger only looking for statistics? Though we may never know the exact number of women who are dates married men here are a few statistics that are indicative of the extent of the how far adultery has gone.

At least 22% of all married men are confess to having strayed form their wives at least once, if not more, during the time they were married. Among married women, 14% confessed to having affairs. People who were younger were more likely to be unfaithful than those who were older and among younger people, the number of women who were unfaithful was the same as the men who did the same. Not surprisingly very few of the spouses were actually aware of their spouse’s infidelity. Only 30% of all married women knew about the extramarital activity that their spouse was indulging in, and only 45% of married men were aware of it. In a survey done in the year 1997, only 3% married women and 5% of all married men reported that they were indulging in sexual relations with a person other then their spouse. Of all the men and women interviewed, 14% women and 22% men admitted that they had had sexual relations with someone other than their spouse at sometime or the other in their past. Despite the high statistics of husbands and wives committing adultery, 90% of Americans actually believe that the act of adultery is morally and ethically wrong. A Time-CNN poll showed Americans are equally divided about President Clintons’ admission of adultery, with 50% believing that his moral standards are the same as any average married man. 61% of all Americans interviewed were against the idea of making adultery a crime in the United States, 35% were for it and a small 4% were undecided and offered no opinion. Of all the marriages in the United States, 17% broke down and headed for a divorce because of the infidelity of one or the other partner. |
